Introduction to Dentistry (12 hrs)

This unit is an introduction to the dental profession. Students will learn the history of dentistry as it has progressed from the beginning until present day. The roles of each member of the dental team will be discussed as well as the eight dental specialties. Students will also be introduced to the major areas of the dental office and major pieces of equipment will be explored. Communication including verbal and non-verbal as well as listening skills will learned. At the conclusion of this course students will have been taught to:

  • Name and describe eight dental specialties 
  • Name and define the roles of the dental team 
  • Identify major areas of the dental office and equipment used 
  • Become familiar with general anatomy and physiology of the head and neck 
  • Identify dental arches 
  • Identify all primary and permanent teeth by name and tooth number
  • Identify surfaces of the teeth 
  • Identify parts of the tooth 
  • Identify the basic components of a patient chart and know how to gather all necessary 
  • information. 
  • Chart restorations 
  • Name and identify uses for dental handpieces 
  • Know the process of maintaining dental handpieces
